Personnel Checks offer DBS Adult First checks to Health and Care sectors
A DBS Adult First allows an individual to be checked against the DBS Adults’ Barred List. This is a check to see if an individual is barred for working with vulnerable adults.
Those employing people for posts that involve working with vulnerable adults may be able to request a check from the Vulnerable Adults’ Barred list.

The DBS Adult First is part of the Enhanced CRB Check process and cannot be applied for separately. At the stage where we send the Enhanced CRB application form for processing, we then apply for the DBS Adult First on your behalf.
The result is an email within 72 hours which checks the individual from the DBS Adults’ Barred lists. We then forward the email to the confirmed designated person within your organisation who can then make a sound recruitment decision.
DBS Adult First is a quick and easy service exclusive to the health sector and requests for the check must fulfill strict criteria and are permissible only where it is necessary to take such action because of a real danger that staffing levels will fall below statutory obligations.
It allows the individual to be checked against the vulnerable adults barred list as an initial and independent check which allows the individual to be recruited and start work under supervision while waiting for their full CRB check results.
The DBS Adult First Checks are only available where a Care Worker may be allowed to start work:
- in a care home
- for a domiciliary care agency
- as an adult placement Carer
The CRB’s reply to an DBS Adult First check request will contain one of the following responses and clearly state that it only forms the first part of the CRB application process and that further information will follow
- OPTION 1: ‘Registered Body must wait for the CRB certificate ‘
- OPTION 2: ‘No match exists for this person on the current Vulnerable Adults Barred list’
The Enhanced CRB Check certificate will check the person against the DBS Barred List as part of the Enhanced check, the DBS Adult First is a quick way of confirming if the person is barred for working with vulnerable adults. A lot of our customers use this tool when recruiting new members of staff.
