In association with:

Apprenticeships at Personnel Checks

We’re searching for the best young talent Lancashire has to offer. But we don’t define ‘best’ by academic achievement. Some of our most successful apprentices weren’t exactly what you would call model students! Integrity, enthusiasm and willingness to learn are far more important. We can teach you everything else you need to know.

Apprenticeships are a part of our DNA. We’ve spent the past 20 years helping school leavers build their careers, gain confidence and learn skills that last a lifetime. In return, our apprentices have invested themselves in Personnel Checks, helping build the culture we have today.

We offer 3 different apprenticeships.

hear from our apprentices

ISOBEL - Apprentice
Joined in 2023

“I didn’t really feel like going to university was the right option for me. Being able to earn and learn at the same time made an apprenticeship the better choice. Personnel Checks stood out for me because I studied Criminology at A-level, so the work Personnel Checks do really interests me. It’s great getting to see behind the scenes of how things work.”

Natalie - Sales executive
Joined in 2019

“I joined back in 2019 and I am so grateful to work with such an amazing group of people. I think doing an apprenticeship has helped me get ahead much faster in my career. I’ve tried multiple roles and am now moving into a sales position which I’m really excited for. I wouldn’t be where I am today without an apprenticeship.”

Ryan - Taxiplus general manager - Joined in 2008

“My apprenticeship with Personnel Checks allowed me to explore a lot of different roles in the business. From administration to accounts (which I was terrible at). I eventually landed on a sales role, which is a position where I thrive and I’ve never looked back. I now head up our specialist taxi licensing business unit, TaxiPlus. I wouldn’t be where I am now without my apprenticeship.”

questions we always get asked

How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

There are a couple of different ways to start the application process for an apprenticeship. You can sign up on the National Careers Service website and apply for apprenticeship roles directly there. Alternatively, you can find an employer who offers apprenticeships, like Personnel Checks, and apply directly with us.

Is an apprenticeship classed as full-time education?

An apprenticeship combines a paid job with practical off-the-job training to help you advance in your career. It isn’t full-time education in the sense of classroom-based learning but an apprenticeship is still a full-time learning experience.

Can I start an apprenticeship at 16?

Absolutely, you can definitely start an apprenticeship at 16! Apprenticeships are classed as full-time education, which means, if you’ve had enough of school and want to get started with your career you can! Many of our apprentices started with us straight out of secondary school.

Can I achieve a degree by completing an apprenticeship with Personnel Checks?

We do currently have team members enrolled on degree apprenticeships but this is something we are still exploring. As degree apprenticeships were only introduced in 2015/16 we don’t have the same experience delivering these courses as we do for Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships.

Do I need A-levels to be an apprentice?

Not at all, you can start an apprenticeship at 16 straight out of school. No A-Levels required!

Why are business apprenticeships good?

Business apprenticeships are a great alternative to college or university meaning you can earn and learn at the same time. Apprenticeships also help you develop a range of soft skills that just can’t be taught through traditional education.

Preparing for your Apprenticeship Application

Make Sure You do Your Research

To properly personalise your application and any interviews, you'll need to know the position inside and out. Find out if there is a number you can call for a casual discussion about the position; don't be hesitant to ask questions if you have any doubts.

Don’t Worry about work experience

Apprentice employers don't expect you to have work experience. They understand that it will very likely be your first job. Consider listing your experiences, interests, and hobbies to demonstrate why you'd be a perfect candidate for the position.

Show them who you are

Make sure you think about how you can show your personality throughout the application process. Workplace culture is a big thing and employers will want to see if you have the qualities that make you right for their team. If you’re making claims about skills, make sure you back them up with examples from your experiences.

Tailor yourself to the company

Make sure you target your application to where you apply. Even if they are all in comparable industries, you must be able to express why you are interested in that career and firm. Hiring managers see hundreds of applications so generic applications significantly reduce your chances of being successful.

Demonstrate your Enthusiasm

Apprenticeships are competitive, so showing a positive attitude and a willingness to learn in the field will help you stand out. Employers are looking for people who align with their values and want to bring new ideas.

Always Double-Check applications

Typos and mistakes are easy to make, but they’re also easy to fix. Get someone to check any applications before you send them. Grammarly is a good free tool you can use to help. Good spelling, punctuation, and grammar shows good attention to detail, and you put effort into it. Mistakes show the opposite.
