SERVICE UPDATE: Changes to Browser Compatibility

Internet Explorer has been a fixture on Windows PCs since 1995 and its icon is instantly recognisable. But after 26 years of support, Microsoft has finally announced that they are discontinuing support for this browser as the technology has become outdated compared to more modern browsers. The original replacement for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, is also being dropped in favour of their new Chromium-based Edge browser.

Chromium is an 'open-source codebase for a web browser’ maintained primarily by Google and now used in Chrome, Edge, Opera, Samsung Internet and a host of others. Now that Microsoft has committed to their decision, this means some behind the scenes development work now needs to be done on our end. Without boring you with a lot of technical jargon, this is to ensure that the system we use doesn’t have any excess baggage and is optimised for the most common browsers.

What does this mean for you?

These changes will come into effect as of Wednesday 30th June 2021. How much this means to you depends entirely on which web browser you use. The impending changes will only affect you if you use Internet Explorer or Legacy Edge. If you use any other browser then the changes we are making will not affect you in any way and you can feel free to ignore the rest of this information!

With three different browsers from the same company, it can be hard to know which are which. Out of the icons displayed below, only Chromium Edge will be compatible with our EmploymentCheck system, out of Microsoft's browsers. This means that you will not be able to use Internet Explorer or Legacy Edge when making or requesting DBS applications.

If you are still using Internet Explorer or the Legacy version of Microsoft Edge, it is important that you assess your other options. We do not yet have a timescale in place for this work, but we will notify all our customers once there is a more solid end date in sight. We recommend downloading another browser. The two browsers we would suggest are either Google Chrome or Chromium Edge.

Why is this being done?

We are constantly assessing the systems that we use to deliver our DBS and background screening services. The EmploymentCheck system is our core platform for delivering our DBS checking service and the planned upgrade will ensure that our systems are as modern and streamlined as can be. This upgrade will not affect the front-end functionality of the system but will optimise it for modern browsers. The work being done will ensure that all the information that we process can be held securely, processed safely and returned to our customers as quickly as possible.

If you have any further questions regarding the coming changes, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! You can give us a call on 01254 355688 or drop us an email at letstalk@personnelchecks.co.uk
