How long do DBS Checks take in different parts of the UK?

Basic and Standard DBS Checks are all generally turned around in a similar amount of time. But the turnaround time for Enhanced DBS Checks can vary depending on where you are in the UK.

Although they all go through the same process, the time taken to complete a check can vary significantly.

One of the key reasons for this variation is location. Where an applicant lives or has lived can directly impact how long their DBS Check takes.

Why does location affect the speed of my DBS Check?

The final stage of an Enhanced DBS Check involves having the application sent to local police forces. The police then check their local records for anything they consider relevant to the DBS Check.

All police forces have a target of 12 days to compile this information and return it to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). While this target is generally met by all police forces, circumstances can make it incredibly difficult to meet.

An example of this is the aftermath of the 2010 student riots. DBS Checks that were sent to the Metropolitan Police were significantly delayed as resources were required to deal with the fallout of the protests.

Any event in an area which requires significant police involvement can negatively impact the turnaround times of DBS Checks.

How fast are DBS Checks near me?

The DBS publishes performance statistics for how fast police forces are responding to DBS requests. These stats are published at the end of the financial year.

The tables on this page look at the average turnaround times by region for the 2020/21 financial year. You can use the navigation to swipe through the tables and find your area.

To stay up to date, you can find the full list of police performance statistics here.
